PUBLIC NOTICE

GUERNSEY PRISON SERVICE – OPEN GARDEN 2015 Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July

Guernsey Prison is to open its gates in July to allow members of the public access to the prison Gardens and Horticulture area. Proceeds from the day will go to the prison’s charity Creative Learning in Prison (‘CLIP’).

The prisoners and Horticulture team have established a formal garden in the grounds of the prison as a focus for the prison’s involvement in this year’s Floral Guernsey. The show garden will include the original hand water pump from the (old) Town Prison, and which prisoners have refurbished.

The Prison Governor, Dave Matthews, said, “It is important that the prison engages with the public. It is normally closed to most people and not many get to see what happens on a day-to-day basis. The attendees will be able to see at first hand the work progressing in the gardens and the projects the prisoners have been working on”.

He continued, “Many local firms have assisted in the creation of the garden and the prison is grateful for the help they have provided. The staff and prisoners have excelled in completing this project”.

The one-hour tour will consist of a guided walk through the main prison corridor then on to the ‘Horticulture Site’. The public will be guided through the greenhouses where prisoners grow their own crops – used daily in the prison kitchen – then will be offered either morning coffee or afternoon tea in the show garden (depending which of the four daily sessions they are attending).

Floral Guernsey Chair, Pat Johnson, said “It's only right that members of the public have a chance to see the garden as part of the Open Gardens Scheme which Floral Guernsey organises - the produce grown is of an award winning standard which Guernsey should be proud of. The privilege of access to see this is something we hope the prison will share again. They are part of our community and work to a very high standard”.

Visitor sessions commence at 09:00, 10:30, 14:15 and 15:30 on each of the two days, Saturday, 11th July and Sunday, 12th July 2015 and last for one hour each.

If you wish to book a place, please complete the Application Form on the Floral Guernsey website and forward it to: Mr Gerry Tattersall, Floral Guernsey, at [email protected]
