RHS Events in Guernsey

A guide to RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) events taking place in Guernsey in 2012. Join local & visiting horticultural experts for walks, talks, open gardens & workshops. At the bottom of this section are details of two RHS recommended gardens which offer free access to RHS members throughout the year.

RHS 'Growing for Sucess Talk'

'Spoilt for Choice - the joys and pitfalls of west coast gardening'

A look at the challenges facing west coast gardeners in west coast climates, where it is possible to grow a very wide range of plants but where weeds grow strongly too! How can we garden creatively in a way to reduce maintenance, benefit wildlife and local landscapes?

Not normally open to the public, this renowned clematis nursery owned by RHS gold medal winner Raymond Evison, OBE, VMH, will host a special event demonstrating the practical elements of growing clematis and showing visitors the breeding and development of new clematis.

Local nurseryman, Bob Paine, will lead a walk through his own  private garden, Les Merriennes,  looking  at the use of trees and shrubs, planted for foliage interest, shelter and wildlife, and highlighting their respective suitability for the various different habitats within the garden

‘From Aquilegia to Agave’

A guided walk through the extensive gardens of La Falaise, St Martin which have been developed over the last 3 decades, with  local garden designer  Helen Lichfield, looking at the different planting styles which have evolved over the years – from cottage garden to today’s exotics. She will give  practical tips on garden design and site appropriate planting, including advice on scree gardening and green roofs.

Set within the grounds of a 17th century manor, the garden is considered one of the finest in the Channel Islands. Many unusual half hardy plants thrive within the walled garden, ensuring a colourful display from Spring through to Autumn.

An extensive collection of sculptures of every sort displayed for sale in the grounds amongst a thick, woodland jungle around the lake - 50 different bamboos, 8 species of palm, tree ferns, 320 camellias, giant echiums, tree fuchsias, hydrangeas, hedychiums, gunneras and Geranium maderense.
