RHS Events in Guernsey

A guide to RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) events taking place in Guernsey in 2010. Join local & visiting horticultural experts for walks, talks, open gardens & workshops. At the bottom of this section are details of two RHS recommended gardens which offer free access to RHS members througout the year.

21/04/2010 Great Dixter & Succession Planting - Fergus Garrett 19.00pm - 21.30pm

'Growing for Success' talk. The talk will cover the history of Great Dixter house & gardens, the major influences that shaped the place including Lutyens & Christopher Lloyd's parents. Fergus will talk about the meadows, use of colour, style of planting & how the seasons are extended by multi layered use of plants. Gardening in the mixed border style, Great Dixter is one of the most dynamic & exhuberant gardens in the country. Included in the ticket price: complimentary pre-talk drinks (glass of wine/soft drink) The drinks are due to start at 7pm & the talk at 7.30pm

Join award-winning nurseryman Raymond Evison for a guided tour of the nursery & workshop, covering breeding & development, demonstration of how to plant a container, combining clematis with other plants, pruning, feeding & cultural advice, propagation & a chance to see the latest cultivars before they come on the market. A glass of wine & nibbles are included in the ticket price. Not suitable for wheelchair users. No special clothing or equipment needed.

03/07/2010 Summer Pruning of Fruit Trees, Ornamental Shrubs & Climbers- Mille Fleurs 10.00am - 12.00pm

Join local horticultural expert John Woodward for a look at how to prune, what to prune, & why to prune in summer during a talk & demonstration at Mille Fleurs garden.Wine & soft drinks are included in the ticket price. Please bring along secateurs, parrot beaks & a small pruning saw if you have them. No disabled access.

Tropical planting in Herm

08/07/2010 Guided Tour with 3 course meal - Herm Island 16.35 - 22.30

Join head gardener Brett Moore & assistant island gardener James Cordingley for a private tour of the exotically planted gardens of Herm Island. Depart from Guernsey at 4.15pm and arrive at Herm Island by ferry at 4.35pm to join the guided tour at 5pm, followed by a 3-course meal in the Ship Inn at 7pm. Meal included in the ticket price. Please wear sturdy footwear.

Chris Bailes, Curator of RHS Rosemoor will lead a walk through the striking garden looking at the use of contrasting foliage, fruit & flowers to create colour & interest in the autumn garden. Wine & soft drinks are included in the price. Not suitable for disabled access.

'Sausmarez Manor Subtropical Woodland Garden' St Martins, Guernsey

An extensive collection of sculptures of every sort displayed for sale in the grounds amongst a thick, woodland jungle around the lake - 50 different bamboos, 8 species of palm, tree ferns, 320 camellias, giant echiums, tree fuchsias, hydrangeas, hedychiums, gunneras and Geranium maderense. visit http://www.sausmarezmanor.co.uk/ for more information.

'La Seigneurie Gardens'  Sark, Channel Islands

Set within the grounds of a 17th century manor, the garden is considered one of the finest in the Channel Islands. Many unusual half hardy plants thrive within the walled garden, ensuring a colourful display from Spring through to Autumn.
