What are Neighbourhood
Awards? They are awards given to communities who want to make a difference to the area where
they live. You may be just one or two people in a Clos or road, or a larger community on an estate for
example. All you need to get started is a core of people with similar interests.
What activities are involved? Enhancement of your locality through floral and sustainable
planting, achieved by community helpers. Maintaining or enhancing the local environment through cleanliness and where appropriate,
by initiatives to preserve or develop natural areas.Building links with other organisations with related interests.
What are the benefits? The awards have been running
for a couple of years in the UK and have worked very well, enhancing local environments and building pride in the community.
They give people a chance to contribute towards bettering where they live and the enjoyment of working with like-minded
friends. Littering and other anti-social problems can be reduced. Residents and visitors
enjoy an overall increase in the attractiveness of the area. In some cases, value has been added to property
and business turnover increased.
Can I get any help or advice on getting started? The Floral Guernsey Council and members of your parish Floral Community Group, if one exists in your parish, will
be only too pleased to offer help and support. The Royal Horticultural Society is also at your disposal
for advice on gardening matters if needed. In the first instance,

parish, if there is one. For lots more information and practical advice go online to http://www.rhs.org.uk/britaininbloom/GettingStarted/neighbourhood_awards.html .
